What are the chances of getting a job?
Though job prospects for scaffolders fell in 2010, opportunities are still very good for those who have an advanced scaffolding certificate.
Shortage of highly qualified scaffolders
The job of scaffolder (advanced) appears on Immigration New Zealand's immediate skill shortage list. New Zealand does not have enough scaffolders with the advanced qualifications needed to oversee scaffolding work, so the Government is actively encouraging highly skilled scaffolders from overseas to work in New Zealand.
Scaffolders fare better than most during building slump
Job numbers for scaffolders have remained steady over the past three years, despite a building slump that has affected many jobs in the industry. A severe shortage of people in the role prior to the recession has meant employers have tried to retain staff even during slow periods.
In March 2010, there were about 1,100 scaffolders, up from about 1,080 scaffolders in March 2007, according to Department of Labour estimates. During this same period employment across the building and construction industry fell by about 5%.
Job opportunities for scaffolders may become harder to find in 2011
Despite reasonable demand for scaffolders in 2010, opportunities have become harder to find and job numbers may fall in 2011. This is because of a drop in new building projects. The number of residential building consents issued in October 2010 was down 21% on October 2009 – to 1,123. This is about 45% lower than the 2,025 consents issued in October 2007, just prior to the building slump.
The value of non-residential building consents was $272 million in October 2010, down 17% on October 2009 and down by almost a third on 2007.
What types of employers can I work for?
Most scaffolders work for scaffolding companies. These range from businesses with just a few workers to nationwide companies that employ hundreds of staff.
Where can I do this job?
Scaffolders work throughout New Zealand. However, most are employed in:Auckland (32%)
Waikato (14%)
Wellington (12%)
Canterbury (12%).
