Took your advice Paddy, Maybe it would have been more polite to open with a joke.:D

Hi Guys

As of current membership details, there are now 635 members.

How would you's feel about a 'Straw poll' to feel if it was right to have a consensus of opinion, regarding, promoting the 'Scaffolders Forum' to professional bodies.

In my opinion, this forum has bridged many a obstacle, and, gained a diverse membership associated with scaffolding operations.

Is this not the time, for us to insist to the relevant bodies, that this forum is a true and just voice of the majority, and require, a input in future consultations.

Could we not elect a Commitee of forum representatives, to represent us.

We have a mass of knowledge, within this forum:-
Scaffolders T&F
Scaffolders System
Directors
Contracts Managers
Design Engineers
Supervisors
Chargehands
Offshore scaffs
Major installation scaffs
Newbuild scaffs
Street scaffs
Asbestos removal, approved scaffs

The list is the tip of the proverbial 'Iceberg' the Knowledge, experiance, training, man hours and cetificated courses would stretch IMHO to over a million man hours of 'forum' experiance.

Your views and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Paddy

Great idea Paddy, as always an inspiration!!!

I have a spare straw poll if you need any?

Paddy

I agree, perhaps this is the time to collate a consensus of opinion whither we as a Forum can offer an effective and efficient contribution to joint consultation with the Policy and Decision makers that Regulate our Industry.

However, will we be invited to the table ???

We might not be invited, so ****, we will invite ourselves.

I do not know if i am waffling at the moment, however,

A Scaffolders Trade Union, or Affiliation.

The following info is from HSE: Information about health and safety at work

Introducing the Subject
The Purpose of this Intervention
1 There is strong evidence to suggest that involving the workforce in health and safety matters has a positive effect on health and safety performance. This makes intuitive sense – those who perform tasks should know most about the hazards posed by their work, and the actions required to work in a safe and healthy way.
2 In order to realise these potential benefits, the Health and Safety Commission has prioritised worker involvement as a key plank of its Strategy to 2010. At the heart of our activity on worker involvement is raising awareness of these potential benefits, by changing attitudes to health and safety, and to worker involvement in it.
3 Achieving this aim requires the commitment of the whole health and safety system – employers, workers, inspectors and enforcement officers, health and safety professionals and health and safety policymakers. Health and safety visiting staff in particular have a vital role to play in promoting the value of worker involvement, and giving practical advice on how workers can be involved.
4 This topic pack is designed to help staff in HSE and Local Authorities to:
• understand what is meant by “worker involvement”;
• understand the legal requirements to inform and consult workers, along with the policy position on enforcing those requirements;
• determine when discussion of worker involvement is appropriate; and
• promote the benefits of involving workers.
5 By implementing this guidance during workplace visits, inspectors will help both the employer and workers (or their representatives) to:
• understand the legal requirement for information and consultation,
• understand what worker involvement is:
• find the subject less difficult to understand; and • be motivated to begin to better participate in the management of health and safety.
6 This pack is different from other topic inspection packs. There is no requirement to measure worker involvement, or to record findings on Inspection Report Forms. This does not mean that worker involvement is not a priority area – it underpins improvements in health and safety performance, and is key in tackling common health issues such as stress and back pain – but it should form part of the veryday visit process, rather than being a separate subject for inspection.
e
7 Using the guidance contained within this pack, Inspectors can play a key role in ensuring Britain’s workforce is more and better involved in health and safety in the future. We welcome feedback on the contents of this topic pack – please direct comments to HSE’s Worker Involvement and Inclusion Team

Paddy

Also from the HSE web site, but it makes sense:

Worker involvement on health and safety is simply a two-way process where you and your employees:

talk to one another
listen to one another's concerns
raise concerns and solve problems together
seek and share views and information
discuss issues in good time
consider what everyone has to say
make decisions together
Business benefits
Talking to, listening to and involving your employees helps to:

make your workplace healthier and safer
improve performance
raise standards
Key words
The key words in worker involvement are:

trust
respect
co-operation
joint problem solving.
Worker involvement does not have to be complicated.

Prepare[1] - Plan[2] - Consult[3] - Improve

Power to the scaffs

trust
respect
co-operation
joint problem solving.
Worker involvement

However Scaff mate, these are the keywords, that get sidesaddled when the project is up and running, and the 'Penalty clause' clock is ticking.

My proposal is to form a committee on this forum, which will endeavour to be recognised by the current policy makers ie. HSE,NASC,CSCS,CISRS and Training providers.

The committee, in question can range from as many persons as this forum requests, and a inclusion of all the diverse disciplnes contained in the previous posts ie from top management, designers down to Trainees, the whole spectrum should have a representative on the Committee.

In my opinion, if this committee comes into being, there will be a need for a meeting of committee members, either quarterly or bi-annualy, to be held over a weekend, to discuss proposals and brainstorming sessions.

Any, willing Committee member will have to be aware that this is a volunteer role, and as such monetary implications will have to be self funded, if not we are going down the lines of all we are against £££££ scaffs getting ripped off.

Is this just a pipedream, i will let yourselves be the judge of that.

Please do not be afraid to give me 'Critical friend' feedback, we are only as strong as our weakest link. ( Paddy you are the weakest link....Goodbye says Anne).

Yours sincerely
Paddy

Great enthusiasum paddy mate, the answer has to be why not,if enough doors and letterboxes are rattled, somebody eventually will listen to what members of the forum wish to be said, sounds good in theory putting it into practise is the only way to find out, keep it going mate...

SCAFF

Scaffolders, Committee, Allied Fields Formation

I would be very interestested to know, on the availability and interest of any member who would wish to reside on SCAFF, in order for SCAFF to propagate, we need to form the aforesaid committee.

I realise this is a Sun Night, and the majority of us Tube Technicians, could be out socialising at the local starbucks, Cappucino (was he in the Godfather) and Cafe latte and a nice stroll home with a Pitta bread full of healthy grilled Turkish meat,;)

I will leave this thread open till 17.00 hrs Sun 14th March 2010, to gain a consensus of opinion.

This is an admirable initiative and I for one will not see a brother Scaff stand alone---count me in Paddy M8, Remits and Portfolio's to be discussed as and when the places can be filled ???.

We have talked the talk, now let us see if we can walk the walk.

Garry
Many thanks mate, it would be a honour for myself and brother scaffs to have a man of your knowledge and experience representing them as a true voice of the scaffolding community.

Welcome aboard matey, nice to know i am not rowing the boat on my own. However, i would like to have a full crew, we will see what the coming week brings.

We cant change the system overnight, it took me 5 years to enable me to get worker involvement/consultation at work recognised at work, and the formation of a H&S committee, and then this was partly due to the HSE enquiring about my companies provision for 'Worker Involvement'.

There are many avenues open regarding the SCAFF proposal, we will just have to form up and submit our joint proposals to many organisations, and have a paperchase back to the source, for future reference and credibility, to show the hierarchy we are not just ships passing in the night.

Paddy

i thinks its a great idea paddy if scaffs would off stuck together 20 years ago and been happy with there grAND A WEEK instead of those money grabbers who would go in to try and get an extra buck therefore dropping everyones rates because the bosses thought if they can work for that much everyone can and there not earning as much to do it spoilt the game as my dad and grandad have always told me they used to earn more 20-30 years ago inflation i dont think a scaffs wage has ever risen properly the rate may have gone up but theres alot more work to get the extra cash

Paddy M8

yer geein me a red face :embarrest: Paddy M8---my knowledge and experience are at the disposal of SCAFF, However, there are many Brother Scaffs standing in the wings that are of the same standing as I.

As you allude to we need Member that have their own Specialisims, i.e. Management, Operations, Training, Technical Data CAD Design Engineers, ect, ect---

The call has gone out---Brother in need...March or Die...

Garry
I agree, however, at the other end of the spectrum, it would be refreshing to have a Trainee, apprentice young blood on the committee to remind us dinosaurs of current training methods and any other issues regarding the new generation of scaffs.

At our meetings, if we can not see eye to eye on any issues, we can always throw our pencils at the trainee/labourer committee member:nuts:

Paddy M8

I concur---aye, a trainee or two would be handy LOLoooo---dont know about throwing pencils though---perhaps we could have a bag of fittings handy loloooooooooooooowwwwwooooooooooooooooooooooooooooosh:eek:

To follow on, yes if there are any Green Hands out there that want to express their views feel free to come ahead, after all the future of the Scaffolding Industry will ultimately be in your hands...
