Been asked to build a truss out scaffold for Otis lifts . The drawing they have given shows a 1200 mm wide by 2500 long scaf . They have asked for board to go sideways so will be approx ten 1200mm boards side by side .bit strange me thinks would be easier to use 4 2500mm or eight foot boards . Any ideas why .?

that is strange , but they might need the boards like that so some can be lifted up to leave a gap so something can come up through the scaffold , thats all i can think of

We do loads for Otis. Their sketches are indicative only and the plan dims don't matter like a shaft tower does. Just run the boards into the shaft - it's never a problem. The only thing that they usually want is a notch in the centre boards on both lifts so they can suspend their cable from the soffit to the base of the shaft. Worth adding an extra tranny adjacent to where this will go as you build.

I would do what Phil said, but extra trannie round the notch ( if its big ) but maybe explain to Otis why your doing it that way instead of the way they asked for...

Did all the lift shafts on Dubai Airport for Thyssen Krupp Elevators. They often asked for boards to run the shortest distance but we discussed it with them and changed if necessary. Phil is right about the cables etc. Give them a ring and arrange a site meeting. After all you are the scaffold contractor and its your knowledge and experience other trades rely on when wanting the most suitable access platform.

agree with everything said here i worked for thyssenkrupp in the states, your knowledge and input is key and it will be better than them bolt to the floor lean out crap they give the fitters,my arse was going like a bee's wing when i stood on it !

Do they feel that unstable Joe. Lift fitters on job I worked on had there own kit, fitted themselves. Looked alright to me. Top floor had normal trussouts installed by scaffs on site for ftting rsj's, hooks etc. Never considered it before, who would sign off or check stability of these kits?

it was like a short youngman board, with a right angle steel on one end and a extending flat plate on the other,

the idea being you measured out to the back of the shaft wall from the door lip,put say 4 inches on it,stand the platform in the doorway and lower it till it hit the back wall obviously trapped at say 5 degrees up onto the angle iron which then was bolted through the top into the floor,

had its own handrails that sat in,,strange but i saw belgian thyss fitters doing one on a hotel in liverpool, they said all they needed scaffold for was gated handrails on the floor openings and access with ladder to the pit,

got on it 9 floors up and it settled about an inch, you could smell eggs at the 1st floor opening!

throw it up the quickest way if its not right their get round it. Ive been at it 40 odd years so know how it works

Would they have to be tied down that way.??

On the 1200 lengths

They'd have to be anyway mate as shorter than 2.13m and only on 2No transoms.

Boards would have a toe board accross either end which would prevent tipping, but boards should be tied down securely to prevent them from moving under an impact or vibrations per TG12:10, or just general good practice.

if i ever get that guy who invented board clips , hes fuckin getting it , every time you do a cant , fuckin head upside down leaning under the scaff , blood rush to the head , its dangerous

lashings all the way , even limpets , dont mind them

Lashing by far the best and strongest but too slow when laying boards by the hundreds. Limpets are ok and don't mind the board clamps now we are boarding from below but the safelinxs retainers are still by far the best solution for speed and performance.

lashings defo the best but far too slow, cos of the price of steel the board clips are now coming with shorter bolts so someone literally has to stand on the board to wrap it off!

Never really noticed Joe but in saying that it's been a while since I bought any. Are you sure your boards are not warping?

no mate asked the supplier, their shiny silver galv not the anodized ones, said they were chinese in origin and they are flooding uk with them, bolts about an inch shorter ,she said lol ;)

Not the first time I have heard that.:embarrest:

I think all the fittings come from either China or India now.

running through the erection of a tower with a cantilever with sg 4 10 in my mind and wondering if its possible to use board clips for the job without it being slightly daft and dangerous , seems to me it has to be lashings or limpets, in fact ive just completed an animation of this job and thats what posed the question

and ive always thought the bolts on board clips were too long
