Why wouldn't you put brickguards on?

Hard hat-less builder hit with falling 10kg stone Ι Construction Enquirer

A construction worker survived being hit with a 10kg stone which fell three metres onto his head while he wasn’t wearing a hard hat.

The 56-year-old self-employed worker suffered a serious head injury and permanent personality changes after the accident at a site in Abbots Leigh, near Bristol.

North Somerset Magistrates’ Court heard that Paul Hinton of Bristol had been hired by Elegance Building Contractors Ltd. to work at a domestic property on September 6 2010.

Work included raising the roof level of the building and cladding part of the property with feature stonework.

Hinton was airlifted to hospital by air ambulance and was off work until early May 2011.

The company used subcontractors for the work but failed to ensure brick guards were installed on the scaffolding, which are designed to stop materials falling below.

Speaking after the case, Health and Safety Executive Inspector, Mark Renouf, said: “This tragic incident could easily have been avoided if the brick guards or similar had been fitted to the scaffold.

“Mr Hinton has suffered major injuries and the incident could very well have led to a fatality. The use of hard hats was not common on this site however the greater failing is not stopping materials from falling in the first place.

“Building companies must learn from this case and make sure basic safety precautions are observed on sites.”

Elegance Building Contractors Ltd, of Princess Victoria Street, Bristol was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay costs of £4,733.

They are pretty much essential but badly designed piece of kit, I'd like to see something which is rolled up and can be attached with zip ties to the handrail. Seen orange roll out fencing used as brickguards which everyone, apart from the site safety manager, agreed was superior to lousy metal brickguards.

Because scaffolders are always to blame and its our fault that the fella nearly died because we were not told to put brick guards on

should have had his fooking hat on , i spent all day yesterday putting brickguards on edge protection no toe board and ended up with a foot gap from the bottom of the brickguard to the steel , but did the peado looking winker of a carrilion manager want them on , of course he did cos there all a bunch of sh!thouses

That would not be out of the realms of possibility - We`ve had to fix a single board and toeboard to edge protection in the past ( pain in the ass hanging 5 fts with butts to support the boards ) , that`s with a triple rail and debris netting for good measure

i was on about the brickguards topscaff, zip tying them together half way down:cry: as if they wernt arkward enough

Question - guys can you use debris netting instead of brick guards? I was on a site the other day and half of the scaffold had brick guards and the other half had debris netting which I thought was just for that "debris" and not to stop falling bricks?

Thoughts please

I would say you can use anything you like it just has to be fit for purpose for what ever is in danger of falling. We use the brickguard for rubble and the netting for dust.

Road tape, used with road pins to form a high vis barrier;)

haha, that is all I saw in Tenerife, well that and a few bits of old timber. They obviously didn't get their copy of tg20 or en12811 yet.

we used to use the barrier fencing as well but in blue, so easy to zippie tie in and much quicker and more tidy than brickquards, then someone started spouting some SG No. something or another and fit for purpose so to make life easier we switched back to BGs now we got broken ones all ver the plae ,even the antitangle ones tangle lolo
