Police searching for 40 tonnes of scaffolding
Scarborough police are investigating the theft of 40 tonnes of scaffolding from a town centre hotel.

The scaffolding was taken sometime during a two-week period between Friday 1 April 2011 and Wednesday 13 April 2011, from a secure yard at the rear of the Royal Hotel, in St Nicholas Street.

Thieves broke in through a padlocked gate and took the haul of scaffolding poles valued at around £5000.

The stolen poles consisted of:

•60 12ft lengths
•100 4ft lengths
•50 8ft lengths
•50 10ft lengths
Each pole was marked with pink paint on one end and white paint on the opposite end.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information about the theft to come forward.

PC Craig Malia, of Scarborough police, said: "This was a substantial amount of scaffolding which would have taken between 20 minutes and an hour to load up.

"It would probably have needed a 20 tonne wagon to load it all up in one visit or would have taken numerous visits with a smaller vehicle.

"The hotel is in a busy town centre location and it is highly likely that someone will have seen the scaffolding being taken."

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact PC Craig Malia, of Scarborough police, on 0845 60 60 24 7, quoting reference number 12110059218.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Too right, scaff369. Not even 3 tonne and they are valuing it at nearly £2.50 a foot! I know steel prices are going through the roof, but have a word...

there is 720 foot of tube to an imperial Ton that load comes to 2.8 ton or 2020 foot of tube
may be there should have been boards and fittings to go with this as well

hahahaha can you imagine them running about like loons wacking each other with tubes and all sorts

wouldnt of needed a 20 tonne lorry thats for sure, my bet is it was on the back of a clappped out old transit..

£5000, worth ?. I would'nt want it back if I could get that much off the insurance.

Just 1 lorry load ? If I open my front windows and sunroof I could get 10 tons in my escort van

I had a bizarre experience a few years ago when i thought someone had stolen a 40 foot tower we had erected, i went into Putney police station to report the theft and got an old African police sergeant on the desk , i had a terrible time explaining to him what had happened, but he assured me he would get to the bottom of it.A week later he phoned me to tell me it was in another yard and the council had instructed another company to take it down as we had no sign board on it and they didn't know who owned it, i got my gear back that day and me and the other scaffold company had a good laugh about it as he charged Wandsworth council more to take it down then we charged to put it up.

u had a right touch that day phillio, scaffold theft in putney whatever next lol.

andy hahahahahaha wouldnt that be great,im sure boris johnstone will bring that in if he gets another term.....but with all this scaffold theft in putney his re-election could be in danger.

Was a first for me Celtic we have lost gear like everyone and never seen hide nor hair of it again , what made me laugh was the African police man who hunted it down for me, any other time the police say " what do you want us to do "

phillio your spot on there i was surprised when the gear was uncovered, not many like him going about now.
