If I'm erecting a 28m tower x 3.5 wide in layher, how many buttress bays do I erect around the base of the tower. Do I just erect 9m (3 x 3m bays) behind the scaffold or do I support the sides as well with buttress bays to avoid side to side movement. I'm not able to anchor to face of building. Any advice or guidelines?

Look in the Layher manufacturer information/user guide, if its not in there it will be a design job

1) If you are using the 3:1 basis for your 9m it is not enough you would need 9.35m minimum
2) you may find that this only applies to internal scaffolds not external
3) the 3:1 option refers to the minimum base dimension thus would apply in all directions.
4) External scaffolds would need design against wind

my recommendation would be get a design in all cases

Wise words as ever Alan

Layhers latest Technical Guide appears to stop at 12.5m for a free standing buttressed tower, so follow Alans advice and go get a design.
