Hi,

hope every one would be fine here,

i would like to know about standard use of extension ladder,
we are facing some concerns of safety personnel over the us of 13 meter long extension ladder install in pit ( confined space) user use ladder along with self retracting life line but safety guys concern is that there mus be landing platform at 9 meter length,

there is not scaffolding in pit, if we accept their argument how we can go down 13 meter on same ladder to erect scaffold?

please can any one share standard practice of long extension ladder?

is there would be a landing platform required on 9 mtr if ladder is 13 meter while ladder is installed on optimum angle .

Regard's

The 9m comes from old working places legislation which required a landing every 30 feet vertically. Current Work at Height Regulations 2005 Schedule 6 says 'Where a ladder or run of ladders rises a vertical distance of 9 metres or more above its base, there shall, where reasonably practicable, be provided at suitable intervals sufficient safe landing areas or rest platforms'. In your case it is not reasonably practicable to provide a rest platform for the scaffolder and it would be sensible to have a full height fall arrest safety line as an alternative. Depending upon what work is being done at the bottom of the pit compared with the work required to get scaffolding into the pit and erect it you may find it possible to agree that the not reasonably practicable argument could also be applied to that work.
I would contact the manufacturer of the ladder and ask for their advice - they make the ladder and must have come across this when designing it and marketing it. A 13m ladder presumably can only be used for a little under 12m free standing length if it has a 1m over run but the vertical height is 11.6m when used at 14 degrees (1 in 4) so it couldn't be used at full extension without hitting the problem.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply,

i will refer "work at Height Regulations 2005 Schedule 6" to safety guys for their concerns,

Actually there is no need of scaffold in pit for performing the work on it,
but they just arguing to provide the scaffold as landing platform especially for person will be descending in pit using extension ladder.

Once again thank you very much
