Two women narrowly escaped being seriously hurt when a scaffolding pole came loose from a van and smashed through the windscreen of their own vehicle.

It happened around 09.30am on Friday, 26th February on the A691 on the outskirts of Witton Gilbert. A silver Ford Transit van was travelling from Red Tile roundabout towards Witton Gilbert roundabout when a scaffolding pole came loose from the rear of a white coloured flatbed van travelling in the opposite direction.

The pole went up in the air and smashed through the front windscreen of the silver Transit, owned by 'Country Style Florists' in Langley Park. It left the female driver and her female passenger with minor cuts from the broken glass.

PC Jim Gratton, who came across the accident while on motorcycle patrols appealed for the driver of the white van to come forward.

"The two ladies were fortunate not to receive more serious injuries. The driver of the van may not even have realised what happened and I am keen to trace them, and any potential witnesses to progress my enquiries."
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
