PLEDGE: Tom Gent is raising money for Andrew Wingren’s daughter, Lucia
THE employer of killed Penarth man Andrew Wingren has pledged to set up a trust fun to help support his little girl, and has already raised £1,000 for the cause.

Tom Gent, owner of Barry-based scaffolding firm Cass Hire and Sales Ltd also said he intends to complete a gruelling assault course on June 8 to raise money for five-year-old Lucia Wainwright.

Half the money raised from completing the Tough Mudder course – described by organisers as a “hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by special forces to test your all around strength, stamina, determination, and camaraderie” – will go towards Lucia’s future with the other half going to the Royal Marines Benevolent Fund.

Mr Gent said: “It wasn’t as if Andrew was a flash in the pan here, he worked with us for a long time and while it’s nothing major it will hopefully help provide for his daughter’s upbringing and help her mother out financially.

“If the situation was reversed and it was someone else in the same position Andrew would have done exactly the same.

“We took part in a charity football match not so long ago and Andrew was on of the first to put his name down.

“He would always get involved in stuff like that.

“There’s no limit on the amount we want to raise.

The more money we can raise the better.”

Tough Mudder courses are kept secret until the last minute, and require entrants to negotiate challenges including 12ft walls, underground mud tunnels, fire and iced water obstacles, and fields of electrical wires with up to 10,000 volts of electricity running through them.

A number of friends and colleagues of Mr Wingren – hailed by Mr Gent as a “real character” last week – will also take part in his memory.

“Andrew would have loved it,” Mr Gent added.
“He would have been up for it 100 per cent.”

The scaffolder’s body was found outside a pub in the village of Malborough, near Plymouth, on Saturday, February 2, close to where the 32-year-old had been working on a project at a hotel in Salcombe Harbour.

A former St Cyres School student he is said to have spent time working in West Wales and in Africa before returning to a flat in Cardiff Bay last year.

He previously worked for local firm SHS Scaffolding.

Got to be honest, I was avoiding reading this as charities can sometimes over whelm you. As if the story wasn't heartbreaking enough, the daughter has the same name as my Mrs, FFS payment en route.
