Head injury changed my life, murder accused tells court

2:30pm Tuesday 27th March 2012 in News

Alleged killer tells court of head injury A MAN who stabbed his friend to death has told how his life was turned upside-down by a head injury.

Michael Hanlon, 52, denies murdering Steve Pass by stabbing him once in the chest, Winchester Crown Court heard.

Hanlon admits the killing but claims an “abnormality of mind” caused by alcoholism and his head injury, said Anthony Donne QC, defending, yesterday.

The jury heard that Hanlon, a scaffolder based at the Esso refinery at Fawley, was attacked by a neighbour and suffered a fractured skull in September 2001.

Hanlon, formerly of Studley Avenue, Holbury, said of the injury: “It changed my life completely. I lost everything after the injury. I lost my confidence.”

He said Karen, his wife of 27 years, left because of his alcoholism.

Hanlon lived in lodgings and then met Mr Pass and lived with him in a tent near Hythe.

Mr Pass, 54, was rehoused in a council flat in Foldsgate Place, Lyndhurst, early last year.

In March Hanlon was staying with him when the alleged murder happened, the court heard.
