A 57-year-old woman had to be cut free from her car after scaffolding collapsed onto it as she drove past.

The emergency services were called after the 24-metre by three-metre high structure collapsed on to her Ford Mondeo.

The woman was not seriously hurt but she was taken to hospital, suffering from shock.

An investigation has now been launched into the incident which happened behind Le Mans Crescent at 2.25pm on Sunday. The car was badly damaged.

A Health and Safety Executive spokesman said: “There is going to be a formal HSE investigation because someone was injured in what was a place of work.

“We will have to decide whether anyone was to blame for the collapse and whether there are any grounds to prosecute.”

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “We would like to extend our best wishes to the person involved in the incident.

“The repair work at the old police station carefully followed all the requirements set out by the Health and Safety Executive, and the scaffolding was erected safely.

“Along with the contractors and the Health and Safety Executive, we will be carrying out an investigation to ascertain exactly how the incident occurred.”
