HARTLEPOOL'S Heerema has clinched a North Sea offshore contract which will create almost 200 jobs at the peak of construction - and secure jobs at the site until next year.

Heerema Fabrication Group will begin work next month on the 2,750 tonne York platform for Centrica’s York Field Development gasfield.

Work is due to be completed in April 2012.

The company currently has 237 members of staff on site at Hartlepool.

It is expected that the peak manning levels on the Centrica York project will see around 190 additional jobs created.

Centrica recently announced development of the York and Ensign fields - which will represent £450m of investment.

Hartlepool is already working on another project for Centrica, the 1,100 tonnes Ensign platform.

Remco van Gilst, vice president business development and sales of Heerema Fabrication Group, said: “The good relationship with our client Centrica and the ongoing investments of Centrica for the UK sector of the North Sea create an excellent opportunity for our fabrication facility in Hartlepool for continued employment conditions and additional supply chain jobs in the region.

“This new contract, together with the ongoing construction work of the 1,100 tonnes Ensign platform, will secure jobs until mid 2012.”

The York platform will comprise 1,300 tonnes topsides and 1,450 tonnes jacket.

The topsides will measure 20 metres in length, 15 metres in width and 16 metres in height. The jacket, with a height of 69 metres, will be installed in a water depth of approximately 43 metres.

The transport and installation of Centrica’s York platform has been awarded to the company’s sister division Heerema Marine Contractors.

The York platform is an unmanned facility with a tie back to Centrica’s Easington gas terminal via a 34km pipeline.

The York Field development will exploit gas reservoirs in the southern North Sea, approximately 35km North-east of Easington.
