The 25-year-old technician, whose name has not been released, working at the US$1 billion Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower, was inspecting the scaffolding on Monday when it collapsed on him, the police said.

He died on the way to hospital, becoming the sixth fatality in the last few months since South Korea’s Keangnam Group began work on the project in 2007.

The building features two 47-storey towers with 918 apartments and another 70-story building.

At a height of 336 meters, the 579 square meter building, set to open this year will be the tallest in Vietnam and 17th tallest in the world, according to Keangnam.

After the death of four construction workers 23 year-old Lam Van Hien, 41-year-old Vo Ngoc Huong, 22-year-old Bui Van Duong and 43-year-old Hoang Van Tao late last year, Nguyen Dinh Duc, director of the Hanoi Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said concerned agencies had coordinated with each other to inspect the construction management, safety equipment and the capability of the contractors.

The Hanoi Department of Construction had concluded in an August 2009 report that the cause of fatalities at the highest tower was the lack of observance of safety measures by workers and low awareness of safety procedures among site managers
