New Guidance from National Access & Scaffolding Confederation (NASC)
SG4:10 “Preventing Falls in Scaffolding”
The SG4:10 - ‘Preventing Falls in Scaffolding’ - will see more emphasis on the creation of a
‘Safe Zone’ by scaffolders covering a variety of safe methods utilising “Collective Protection
Measures”. This revision will also see the removal of the practice of the ‘unprotected
traversing element’ from the tunnelling principle.
The NASC recognise that personal fall arrest equipment will always need to be used by
scaffolders and for certain applications this will remain the primary method of protection.
It has to be recognised that initial investment and increased future overheads are major
factors to be taken into consideration by Scaffolding Contractors. However, the guidance
will help ensure scaffolders and their employers work more safely and comply with the
requirements of the law.

Collective protection measures include existing and improved systems of work and
various forms of proprietary equipment.
