A TEENAGE student has been hailed a hero after helping two men who were seriously injured after scaffolding collapsed.

Widnes fire cadet James Giblin was on his way to Warrington Collegiate when he spotted the accident on Kerfoot Street on October 11.

The 17-year-old said: “We could see two men working on a building with scaffolding.

“As we crossed the road, the scaffolding collapsed and we ran to see if they were OK.”

James assessed their injuries before supporting the head and neck of one of the injured men and showing a bystander how to do the same.

James, who hopes to become a firefighter, added: “I knew I had to do something to help the men and we had recently been taught at cadets what to do if there was a risk of neck and head injuries.

“I really hope the men are ok and I’m just glad that being a fire cadet taught me what to do.”

The two men were taken to hospital after fire crews had arrived at the scene.
