Two construction workers were hurt Tuesday afternoon when scaffolding collapsed on them, Norman fire officials said.

Norman Deputy Fire Chief Jim Bailey said the accident happened about 12:30 p.m. at the Cleveland County Jail construction site, east of the Flood Avenue and Franklin Road intersection.

Bailey said the men were working on scaffolding inside the building when cinder blocks began to collapse. The men fell between 12 and 18 feet.

He said when firefighters and emergency crews arrived, construction workers already were trying to pull their co-workers from the rubble.

EMSStat ambulances transported them to Norman Regional Hospital. Bailey said neither man’s injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Bailey said both workers are in their 40s. Their names were not immediately available.

Bryan Timberlake, president of Timberlake Construction of Oklahoma City, said the accident site was closed off Tuesday afternoon.

Timberlake said an investigation was underway into how the scaffolding collapsed. Safety personnel from Timberlake Construction and Sun Valley Masonry were expected to arrive this morning and inspect the site.

Timberlake said the injured workers are not employees of his company. The men worked for Sun Valley Masonry, based in Phoenix, Ariz.

“We also need to speak with the two men involved,” Timberlake said.
He said only one section of the scaffolding collapsed. It was erected Tuesday morning.

Timberlake said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration was not required to be notified about the accident.

“We will file a report with them. We are part of a OSHA star partner program in which we self-report,” Timberlake said.
