A MAN was airlifted to hospital yesterday after falling 25ft from scaffolding while working at a north-east fish factory. Emergency services were called to the Iceberg factory in South Harbour Road, Fraserburgh, at about 11.15am.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, works for Aberdeen mechanical services firm Sparks and had been working in the cold store area at the time of the accident.

It is understood he fell from 25ft to the factory floor below. A worker at Iceberg, who asked not to be named, said it had been a “scary” moment. “He was up on the scaffolding doing some sort of work and then he just fell,” he said. “It looked quite serious and there was talk that he might have punctured a lung.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service last night confirmed the man had suffered back and chest injuries. A spokeswoman added: “We were called to South Harbour Road following reports that a man had fallen. “An ambulance and the air ambulance attended and the casualty was transported to of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by air ambulance.” Grampian Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene. One appliance from Fraserburgh attended and a crew of six helped paramedics move the injured man.

Sparks, which has its headquarters at Bridge of Don, specialises in refrigeration, air conditioning and mechanical and electrical engineering.
Last night the company confirmed one of its employees had been involved in the Fraserburgh incident but declined to comment further.
Iceberg also declined to comment, saying only there had been an accident.
