We have never hired gear always bought it as we needed. Just wondering what the pro's:) and con's:sad2: of hiring the gear and what's a decent price e'g per fit and foot of tube etc? Cheers guys

Prices subject to what you can negociate from list price we use beaver and get 80% discount.

PROS - No capital outlay , ready availability , back it as required , not having to pay 90p a foot or 9 quid a board to purchase.

CONS - Never seems to go back off hire , gets mixed in stock , end up paying top dollar to get off hire.

We usually have 100,000ft on hire , dont hire fittings as to dear , Boards also work out dear !!

Guide price - 21ft tube bout 0.08 per week
13ft Board 0.14p per week

Trad have offered us.
Galv' Tube (per ft)... £0.0075 per week
Scaff Fittings (each)... £0.0188 per week
13ft Boards (each)... £0.2688 per week

Was wondering if thats a good rate. Seems like a lot of hassle keeping check of the gear.

No mate just steady at moment. Quoted for a job over in fleetwood thought it might be easier to hire the gear and have them drop at site. Asked Trad and Generation for quote
thats what Trad came back with.

Always handy for you to throw a bit of any bent tube you have into the return loads when its off hired, only used to be bothered about the correct footage of tube has been returned,a good way of getting some nice new gear for streetwork..:D

we use beaver 84 , there prices are cheaper mate by looks of it

used to hire a lot of gear from Trads always found them good , but like scaffy says it never ends up going back and you pay a small fortune for it in the long run, its ok if you do a big lump and get them to collect straight from job , also if it over runs and the contractor is reluctant to pay x hire can be cheaper to buy and then sell what you dont want

Dandaps we use beaver at widnes , guildford and Livinston allways had a good deal on delivery ect from all these depots

Hire gear !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi mate, we have been hiring gear recently from Generation & Trads , it sounds cheap when you ask for a quote, and its pennies per foot, but we hired about 500 boards, 500 long & 16s and fittings and the bill is around £1500 per month at moment and cant off hire as all units are up, it can be crippling, get it hired and off hired ASAP.

15 years ago we hired of Deborahs and was quoted £20K for hire after they had a QS look at the job, then got a £50K bill half way through, we ended up in a 5 yeay court case with them, and in the end we had to pay them £20K out of court !!!!!

Be careful mate

oh yes got one going on like that at the moment just about to settle out of court !!

Is true in 9 out of 10 scenarios you end up buying all the rented gear at a premium or having to be replaced with new kit

we buy small amounts of gear as and when we need it, if its alot then we hire it, dont want to buy big amounts for a job only for the work to dry up after! just hired 22 tonnes mixed load from generation for £1500 2 months, dont know how much that would have been to buy but until the time comes when we have that sort of money to buy, this is the safest bet for us. plus the bigger picture is, we havent got to transport all that gear from a to b costing loads in diesel, time, and hard work etc and its all brand new stuff so it looks good as well

Gear is too dear to buy at the moment which is why hire is the best option

Hi atlash,

It seems we might have a bit in common with the smaller firm. That's pretty much how we done it then maybe buy the last load off a job after the mc has paid all the hire then negotiate a good price for the final bit and build from there.

You asked about our truck, the distance between us is not that far, I went about an hour south of Norwich to get a second trailer for it. If you want reliability and checkable service history you could do worse than jump on a cheap flight and come and see it, she most certainly wont disappoint.

I've rented once from deborahs, what i pile of *****, 2000 sticky bolton doubles soaked in diesel and seized, bent tube, 5ft tubes not a constant ie between 4 and 6ft in length transoms looked like *****.

Personnally I prefer to buy, even 2nd hand to keep the cost down and once paid for it is a company asset.
