Two companies yesterday pleaded not guilty to workplace health and safety breaches relating to the deaths of two men who fell from a scaffolding swing stage at Broadbeach.

Chris Gear, 36, and Steve Sayer, 52, were killed when the swing stage they were working on fell 26 floors from Meriton's Pegasus development on June 21, 2008.

Yesterday, legal representatives for Pryme Constructions Pty Ltd and Karimbla Construction Services Pty Ltd appeared in Southport Magistrates Court and said they intended to take the charges to trial. Both companies entered pleas of not guilty to the various breaches. A date for trial is expected to be set on February 12.

Allscaff Systems Pty company director Ralph Smith is currently in negotiations with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. The court was told two months would be required for the discussions.

The matter was adjourned until March 12.
