To all and Sundry

Firstly, may I say from the outset that I have no vested interest nor receive any fiscal remuneration in the promotion of the Safespan Product range.
Indeed, my interest in the Safespan Platform System is part of my work scope remit which identifies new Products and Procedures which may contribute to the enhancement of the Access and Scaffolding Industry. Therefore, in the interest of this horizon scanning exercise, may I invite members of this forum to view the web-sites listed below and post any feed back comments to this thread.

Safespan- Bridge Platforms, access systems, painting platforms, & shielding

The first web site gives little or no info on the system, but the second site click on About Safespan and it gives you a better idea of what the system is and how it works.

For my money, it looks like a proprietary system for Slung scaffolds consisting of vertical wire ropes with horizontal wire ropes instead of tubes and metal decking plates instead of boards.

For more informed opinions you would need to get more detailed info on components, load ratings, erection times and maybe some of the more expert scaffs would weigh in with their tuppence worth, sorry can't be more help:embarrest:

Firstly, thank you for taking time out to reply to the Post.
Secondly, may I apoligise for the lack of information on the Links, in hind sight it was anfair of me to expect detailed feed back with such insufficiant information. I have tried to attach a Breif Presentatin on the Safespan System which includes a more detailed submittion, i.e. self weight, wind stress calculations, ect...

I will try to post Technical Data, ASAP.

As you may well have established, the Safespan System is distributed through Turner Access---I met with the Turner Management Team Last year on a Product awareness visit, +8 and variouse Access Systems were demonstrated and discussed---I was perticularly interested in the Safespan, I was taken for a Site Survey on the White Cart Viaduct and had first hand viewing of the SS System. The potential for the SS System is far reaching and if it takes hold in the U.K. I would be looking to Scaffolders to Install/Rig the SS System. Im looking at Offshore Decommissioning application for the SS System---just got to covince the Offshore Operators of the value of 2 lbs per Sq Ft self weight of the SS Systen in comparison with Traditional Tube and Fittings.

Iv worked with a number of Glasgow Scaffold Erectors over the years---John ( Cowboy ) McCormack--- Fredie, John, Angie, Donnie, Gerry McMillan---Big Rab, Little Rab, Tam Gallagher---Joe Buckly---I could go on, but I'll stop there...

Anyway, I'll get some info and Post it.

Hello Garry

The product looks ok, I remember it going up at Tinsley, I do worry about who will actually erect/dismantle the product, looking at the bumpf and remembering looking at the job it appears as if Rope Access Operatives where undertaking this operation.

I do hope it is not yet another Scaffolder minimiser along the lines of Powered Access & Mast Climbers, you cant beat the sight of a massive T&F hanger seemingly supported by nothing more than thin air!!

The Safespan System is comparatively a new Product in the U.K. and as such the demarcation lines have not been drawn as to which Disapline will install it, in my opinion Scaffolders and Scaffolding Orginisation should take the initiative and embrace the System as part of their Portfolio of Skills.

It is not beyond the understanding of Scaffolders to master related skills such as Task Specific Rigging Operations and Rope Access Techniques.

The Rigging Operations associated with installing the Safespan System are comparatively basic, Product Awareness and Installation Courses are available.
Rope Access Techniques are not always necessary, it depends on the Job.

Access and Egress Scaffold are integrated into the Safespan Structure, this is another reason why Scaffold Orginisation should Wellcome the System, the coupling of Structures in Tube and Fittings or Modular Systems and Rigging Techniques would project the Disapline of Scaffolder into a Specialisim.

Evolutionary changes has seen our Industry splitting into two sectors, Prefabricated Modular Scaffold Systems and Special Structures in Tube and Fittings, why not enhance the Scaffolders Skill remit by including Task Specific Rigging and Lifting Operations ?---can Scaffs afford to give this work away to another Disapline ?...

I hope the Scaffolding Industry has the foresight to see that Special Structures in Tube and Fittings and new innovations akin to Cable Suspended Access Systems can compliment each other.

Paul, I agree there is nothing comes close to a Tube and Fitting Structure nor ever will, however, where the Self Weight of the Structure is an issues of concern, Safespan is an excellent option.

I have tried to post a Breif Introduction to the Safespan System, however, it will not upload, SF Admin has tried but to no avail, however, If you or any one viewing this post would like me to e-mail you direct, please send me a Private Message with your e-mail contact and I shall send you a copy...

The H&S Executive have approved the System for use in the UK.

I was invited to Survey the System at White Cart Viaduct Glasgow, I was very impressed, if the Scaffs dont take this on board they will regret it I'm sure.:cry

My Grandmother could Install it...;)

P.M. me with your e-mail address and I send you more info...

Looks like it could be a good addition to any scaffold co,to be able to offer this service, anything that takes the strain and time out of a job can only benefit the lads putting this system up as well as making the firm more cash, the down side will obviously be having to shell out on rope access courses, and possibly having to employ a level 3 rope access guy to oversee the work at least until the lads are more qualified. As with all things there will be a decent initial layout for the gear and courses, but could well be a money spinner if you get in early, important to be one step ahead..

I agree,--- with any new Product or venture there is an eliment of initial outlay, however, there are deals to be had ;), it's all about mutual benefits,

Mutual Benefits

Safespan

In the interest of Product Placement and Exposure to the U.K. Market, perhaps, Safespan Inc New York would consider a reduced rate of; New Sales, Refurbished Sales and or Hire Charge for the Safespan Component Parts.

Scaffold Company

Would benefit from Reduced Rates, lower initial fiscal outlay, this provision would give a larger profit margin, the money saved would pay for the Training Courses. This will establish the Scaff C.o. in the Market Place= one step ahead.

Scaffold Erector; Rigger; Rope Access Technician:

The three main Disaplines required to Install the System, how difficult would it be to recruit these Disapline and create and develop in-house Training Programs. A Traditional three man Crew would consist of:

1 Scaff
1 Rigger
1 Rope Access Tech
and or multiples of, depending on the Size of the Job.
