Just a gentle reminder that 31.1.13 is tax deadline day if you need to get your tax return done.

Fines for lateness are massive these days, so get it done!!

Well that's been and gone, hope you all made it in time.

If you didn't get around to it, do it as soon as possible... don't put it off any longer!

Our Did I miss the tax deadline blog gives some more info.

Roll on April 6th - the next important day!

Tax deadline day 31.1.14

Bumping this because the message is still the same!

If you should be doing a self-assessment tax return, especially if you're CIS/ self employed/ sole trader, then it needs to be on HMRC's desk by 31st January - no ifs or buts!

If you're PAYE and not sure if you are entitled to claim anything back from your tax, give us a quick call to find out.

As said before, we are now recognised as a high volume - low risk tax return and refunds agency with direct access to a team of HMRC’s Agent Account Managers. We offer even more security to the refund we get for you.

I am a UK/US citizen resident in the UK. I own an interest in an apartment complex in California via a US LLC (Limited Liabiltiy Company). My US business partner and I now wish to sell the property (which we have owned for over 5 years) and realise a sizeable capital gain. I would like to roll-over my gain into another US commercial property under the US 1031 Exchange rules. If I do this will the US 1031 Exchange also allow me to postpone the payment of capital gains tax in the UK where I reside? I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

Phil,

I think you asked us something similar before about trying to avoid paying capital gains tax and would the IRS or HMRC ever find out... ;).

I think what you're asking is very specific and as you know, we are experts in our field of getting good tax refunds for tradesmen, not in what you are asking.

You need to find a specialist, either here or in the US, who is competent in property tax and capital gains tax and how it impacts your dual nationality and liabilities in both countries.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Their is no actual written law that says you have to pay income tax in the usa phil, take it all the way to capitol hill....and better tax isnt that deadline for online returns only ?

Fair enough, although we are discussing capital gains tax.

Every year tens of thousands protest it mate, like the tobacco companies not admitting smoking causes cancer before congress as it would bankrupt the country, it was a big thing when I lived there and especially in the south it may have been pushed as truth but just an urban myth

Dont forget their constitution overides everything in their heads so even if amended at a later date they still wouldnt have it.....look at the 2nd....they aint letting that one go !

I do mate. but I do have a friend who hid his 200k in a client account after selling his property in dorset, now used it to buy another property in cornwall. Of course I doubt BT will condone this sort of practice on an open forum.;)

Yes, I was referring to UK online tax returns deadline day... 31st January every year. Paper tax return deadline day is 31st October each year.

The UK tax year starts on 6th April each year, which is different to the USA, which I believe is 15th April.

Capital Gains Tax is outside of our sphere of expertise, and as with all things, specialists in those areas should be consulted.

Frederik, although that sounds dodgy, and as I am no expert in such matters and this particular view is mine based on reading this article re tax avoidance Vs tax evasion, and not knowing the ins and outs of your mate's arrangement... lets hope your mate and his accountant know what they are doing.

He is a mate BT, sadly, wouldnt break my heart if he got caught out on this one. Been signing on since of known him, weve all been paying for his life style. Sadly I aint a grass. :smile1:
