TESCO have hit back at claims by a scaffolding company that it was not consulted over plans for a new supermarket development in Bromley-by-Bow.

The Advertiser reported last week how TRAD Scaffolding, which employs 300 people at its Bromley-by-Bow site, said that Tesco's proposals are being pushed through the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation's planning system without landowners being consulted and that hundreds of jobs would be wiped out.

But a spokesman for Tesco said the supermarket giant had been in negations for 'some time' and was still waiting for a response from its latest contact in April.

He said: "Dialogue with a full range of stakeholders - including local residents, community groups, local businesses and elected representatives - has been a key element in the evolution of our proposals for Bromley-by-Bow.

"This included a public exhibition in September last year to which residents and businesses from 5,062 local addresses were invited."

London Thames Gateway Development Corporation's planning committee will consider Tesco's application at its meeting on Wednesday, May 26.

If approved, the new development at the side of the A12 Blackwall Tunnel Approach Road will include a new, bigger supermarket, more shop units with 468 poarking spaces, 403 flats with 183 parking spaces, a primary school and children's centre as well as parks, squares and access roads.

A spokesman for London Thames Gateway Development Corporation said TRAD had even submitted its own application four years ago to redevelop the site for housing, which was refused because it would have "compromised the redevelopment of the whole area".

She said that the corporation had been working with Tower Hamlets council to produce a detailed planning framework which was developed with Bromley-by-Bow residents and businesses.

She said: "LTGDC has been looking to landowners and developers to work collaboratively to facilitate comprehensive redevelopment in the area.

"A rare opportunity has now been put forward by Tesco to transform a large underutilised area to create a new district centre, which in turn will create new jobs and much needed housing for the local community.

Will this affect TRAD

Hi

Does this mean that TRAD will have to move ? Is it their current yard or just an extra area of it. ? :wondering:

If they have to move it will be one less scaffolding contractor in central london. More lorries travelling in and out, more congestion, more pollution.

Most scaffold firms are being pushed further out due to the better money to be made from housing, retail, office, etc.

Chris:

Why are they building 403 flats and only 180 odd parking places. You wouldn't get that passed the first round of planning here. Speak to any small developer and they will tell you the house to parking ratio is getting so ridiculous that it's becoming prohibitive. At least the big boys are still managing to get round it though.:toung: Sorry Chris, don't know if it will affect Trad.

Trads yard is massive, right on a canal about 2 miles from central london right next to blackwall tunnel for south london
in other words ideally located.
They have other massive yards all over london one just over a mile away-i think its more about the flats which even in todays economy would be worth a fortune.
Trads yard must be worth 10 mil plus but if tescos are promising to build a school etc looks like it will get the goahead.

theres a couple of items missing from here

TESCO made a bid for the land twice with LTGDC, and twice it was in negotiation, TESCO and LTGDC pulled out twice.

TESCO are trying to compulsory purchase the land, at a fraction of the market value. how a private company can do this...................you tell me

TESCO went on sky tv and said they already own the land,

TESCO want ownership on 1st jan 2011...........six months away,

TRAD will sell, if a suitable site can be found in the same area,

Scaff
.
EFA

Tesco hold a bigger brown envelope than Trad to entice the local councilors:D

I can tell you that we are definitely moving to another yard, I was on the Demonstration outside Stratford town hall a good month back. We are waiting for a little more money so I am told. Don't really know the ins and outs of it but nobody is losing their job. I know that for a fact. Well, unless there is a downturn in work obviously.
