Police have arrested a Carlisle truck driver on suspicion of manslaughter following a fatality at a building site. The dead man has been named as Gary Mellor, 20, of Mount Pleasant Road, Currock, Carlisle.

He sustained fatal injuries when he was hit by a flat-bed truck carrying scaffolding, which was reversing onto a building site in North Road, Aspatria, around 8am on Friday.

Mr Mellor was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle where he was pronounced dead.

The truck driver, aged 27, was later arrested, interviewed then released on bail until June 8. The police investigation is continuing.

Mr Mellor’s parents today paid tribute to their easy-going football-loving son.

Margo Mellor, 47, said: “He was a lovely lad who loved his family. He had hundreds of friends and he used to crack jokes all the time. He was such a prankster.

“He didn’t drink and he never swore in front of me.

“He was the best – honest to God he was.”

Gary was a former pupil of Bishop Harvey Goodwin School in Currock and St Aidan’s County High School.

He played football for Northbank in his teens and had worked as a scaffolder for M&M Scaffolding (Northern) in Upperby for a year.

His mother said it was the “job of his dreams”.

His father, also called Gary, said: “He was mad keen on football. He thought more of Newcastle United than he did of me sometimes.

“He was so looking forward to the World Cup.”

Gary’s friends have signed a replica Newcastle United shirt, in which he will be buried, but the date for the funeral cannot be set until police release his body.

This may be several weeks because a criminal investigation is underway.

The Health and Safety Executive is also investigating.

A post mortem was due to be carried out today and an inquest will open shortly.

Gary is survived by three sisters Carly, 27, Kelly, 25, and Jodi, 23.

Tributes have been posted on a specially set up internet Facebook page.

Ninety comments had appeared by this morning.

One friend wrote: “Shocking don’t even come close....you were a much-liked lad with a whole life ahead of you, cut short. Take care and rest in peace.”

A tragedy that could have well been avoided had there been an escort marshalling provision on Site---barriers and designated walk ways.

I totally agree with you mate, we have all the above,, preventive measures, and also a one way system, to try and prevent reversing.

What a waste of a young life, lost at work, that could and should of been prevented.

RIP Gary Mellor
