Public liability insurance customers have been told that almost 90 per cent of scaffolding companies applying for trade membership do not meet the standard.

Figures from the trade body National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC) showed that of the 65 firms that applied for membership, only nine met the standards required.

NASC president Bob Whincap said that companies need to understand that it is not easy to become a member as the body has set high targets.

"Despite a large number of companies not meeting the criteria on their first attempt, these firms have listened to our advice on how to reach our criteria and have gone away to implement the necessary changes," he added.

In order to gain membership, public liability insurance customers must directly employ more than 75 per cent of its workforce.

The NASC also requires members to send three-quarters of its operatives on a training course run by the Construction Industry Scaffolders Record Scheme, which offers advice at various levels from labourer to supervisor.

As members of the NASC, firms will be given a wealth of professional advice on health and safety, recruitment, security and insurance.
