AROUND a ton of scaffolding crashed into a roadway in Merseyside during the early hours of this morning.

Traffic diversions were set up and a parked car damaged after the collapse at a house in Aintree.

Telephone wires were also torn down by the collapse.

Metal and debris was scattered across the carriageway in Greenwich Road.

Police were called out to the scene at about 12.25am. The section of road remained cordoned off this morning for an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to be carried out.

It is believed repairs were being carried out to the roof of the house, which was occupied at the time. There were no injuries.

According to a neighbour, who asked not to be named, a number of youths who had been congregating at a nearby cemetery pulled the scaffolding down.
