Two workers were seriously injured when the scaffolding they were standing on collapsed at a building under construction.

The workers were on the unfinished ninth floor of the building in Sawan when the scaffolding gave way.

They fell through to the eighth floor. Each man suffered two broken legs.

The workers were taken to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Hospital in Ajman soon after the accident, which happened at 10pm on Monday, said Brig Saleh Saeed al Matroushi, of Ajman Civil Defence.

“We have started our investigations,” he said.

“We will be able to tell the exact cause of the accident after the investigations.”

The building was cordoned off until this morning.

Khalifa al Falasi, the head of the municipality’s buildings department, said it would intensify its inspections of construction sites to ensure that all companies abided by safety procedures.

Samples of building material would be collected for testing from every building under construction, he added.

“The municipality will not tolerate any negligence in construction if detected in the investigation,” said Mr al Falasi.
