what is the matter with scaffolders today? ive been scaffolding over 20 years
and run my own firm these blokes today are a pile of dog pooh, there late, lazy
and only want to work 4 days a week instead of 7 lol is it time to stack shelves in tesco yet or what????

the same could be said about the so called scaffolding firms these days, drop you when they get slack and pay well under the odds wages, well in the north west anyway.i think its disgraceful, its all got to be worth while workin 7 days and its quite rare that is the case.and in defence nearly all scaffs dip a shift or 2 its the name of the game

dying breed my friend, some of them i know couldnt even stack shelves in tesco.

to be fair spook 9 times out of 10 you only get dropped when your not as good as the boys already there, thats why its important to be as good as you can and NOT drop shifts, only my opinion.

yeah we know that we all know wen we can see quality workers, its just finding the balance, from work and pleasure.and also to know when you have had enough to drink, your work speaks for itself in my opinion.but point taken

The trouble today is the carrot on the bit of strings gone mate.I've been scaffolding 32 years and the fun and moneys gone out of the game.Had my own firm for a while but still mucked in most days, had the dinner time drink with the lads, always paid good money and the lads always done a good days graft and off home at 3 o'clock.Health and safety and greedy firms in it for a fast buck are 2 significant factors that have screwed the game up today. The other problem is lack of training, part one's teaching trainees it just ain't gonna produce quality men.I've worked for Trad,Palmers,SGB,Deborahs,Ramports,Mills and many more and the quality of men they carry now in the main, these fellas wouldn't have lasted a day years ago.

A very good post.
Im of the same opinion, tbh.

Scaffolders and Scaffolding firms dont like each other anymore...

  • Scaffolders are regularly taken the piss out of, by their bosses, who wanna pay them fukk all, whilst getting them to bust their arse all day.

And;

  • Scaffolding firms tend to look after the w@nkers, because they are either yes men, grasses or suck arses. (Most of these guys cant produce a days work, even if they had to dump it out their arses)
  • They usually let the good ones go, by treating them like shiit.

A biased kinda point of view i know.

P.S: Most Scaffolders are lazy, yes. - But why should we kill ourselves, to earn you bosses even more money?
Most of the people ive worked for ALREADY have more cash, then they could ever spend, but they still screw the fukk out of their blokes, to earn even more money.

Greedy tw@ats, if you ask me.

theres no WANT to scaffold any more its more they have to. To many kids with belts and not enough joeying they have it to easy at times

Yea too many younguns wanting to be seen as scaffolders when actually they aint been doin it for 5 mins. Im 29 (still young looking lol) and have been scaffolding since i was 18, worked for alot of big and small firms and have some good experience under my belt. I find that other young people with alot less experience would rather me not tell/show them how todo the job properly asif they are embarrassed or too proud to be shown.

Daves right, they dont want todo any joeying, but we all know it goes with the job, especially when starting off.

Id much rather work with someone more experienced than myself anyday. I love to learn new things, I couldn't imagine being any other way.

100% agree.

I worked with a nice old boy, he was about 63 then and it was a good few years ago.

Named: Eddie Hanson, from Middlesboro.
A proper gent, and a very, very good Scaffolder.

He'd been Scaffolding about 42 years and he told me:
"Im still learning new things and i still work with youngsters who show me new and easier ways to do things".

Thats coming from a man, with more Scaffolding experience, then most sites have, totally, lol.

am a young gun, been scaffolding almost 6 year, wouldnt say im the best scaff but i know my stuff, currently workin on a shutdown n gonna have worked 28 ten hour shifts plus 2 hours a day traveling this monday ,,,,,,,,,,,bring on more hours a say

The man was right Jason, never too old to learn, but a lot of the young un's today can sling 3 lifts around a house and think that's the be all and end all of it.I asked a 30 year old advanced scaffolder the other day if he knew what a finial was or heavy suspension tube was,and he looked at me as if i was talking Russian.

To be fair.

Im 30, 13 years under my belt, Advanced Scaffolder, been a Chargehand for about 8 years, Foreman on several jobs, worked with some very good Scaffolders on some of the biggest jobs in the world and I have absolutely NO CLUE to what those 2 things are, lol.

Finial and Heavy Suspension Tube?
Its a bit Russian to me also. :embarrest:

It's ok mate your probably not on your own.I'm 53 and been scaffolding since 1979.Had my advanced since 1987.A finial is a fitting half spigot and half swiveled single.Good for church steeples, the cone type where you can angle your hemps to the shape of the steeple if you get my drift.Heavy suspension scaffold is 4" tube, mainly used for spuring heavy duty bridging.Apologises [to the people who do know]for teaching your mother to suck eggs.Another 2 that fell on deaf ears were Fish bellied beams and Molex anchors.......

Id like to correct myself there i dont tarnish everyone with the same brush and meant to say 'some' younguns.

Whats in a name

Kit is called different things from one end of the uk to the other

One hour working with a guy tells you if he is a scaffolder or a numpty

Story

Monday morning, new start at a scaffold firm. Supervisor met us on site to show us job take our details, He then decided to hang around and check us out.......We were setting out and refering to the kit as pipes, planks and one or two bolt clamps or moving two bolt clamps.....He gave it half an hour then fecked off shaking his head

Ok , but , If it was easy and cheap to run a firm wouldn't more of us do it ourselves
They carry the risk , they carry the cost , if it all goes pete tong for them they lose they're life
In our case we get another start
In all fairness I dont begrudge them takin the lions share
It's the same As ur kids , you'll do anything to protect them
And make them do well even if u piss a few people off on the way
