Is there any UK firms still manufacturing Fittings in the UK?

Asking the question since receiving a quote from a Beijing company. $2.60 per kilo,any fitting. Sold by the weight and not single items

Time once,was Uk companies manufacturing fittings for local market and export. Quite a big market I would imagine.
Untill some bright spark discovered fittings could be made in the far east at a fraction of the cost. Chinese imports were heavily subsidised as far as import duties,to help boost the chinese economy.
What happened as per other industries we couldnt compete,so the industy all went the same way.
Now(I believe) the prices of fittings have crept up to the same prices as uk manufacturing costs. So what have we gained in the long term???
This is one industry,theres hundreds of others gone the same way.
Factories closed all across the country with massive job loss.
Who'se still making,and how are they competing??
Is there a solution.??
 
Presco are still manufacturing in the south east/maybe london.
I think boulton still are as well.
Im only a scaff so not really involved on the buying,but i have serious doubt over the quality and standard of these cheap immitations from india and china.i know there have been a few collapses in america and the reasons given were inferior scaffolding from china.
Buy british if possible at all times but im not in that position

Spot on Dafty,interesting to know a few companies still going. British made goods were always renownd for quality. Will google companies you mentioned .Do you know, pressed or df???
 
there is barney baseplate think he info metals now , not really major fitting manufacture as such but ya know lol there is also a place down wales manufactures allsorts , name alludes me at present they changed name couple years ago
 
Im sure presco do both they supplied cape and they only use the little giant type df
 
Presco manufacture in walsall west mids

Barney / info / trade magic as they are now known import from china

Boulton got brought out by scaffom a few year ago import from india

Think presco only uk manufacturer now
 
Thats the problem the suppliers import the gear and when you buy the gear from them you assume its up to the job that its intended for.
 
Presco do not manufacture anymore in the UK they import from China under the Presco brand nobody manufactures fittings anymore in the UK. A shame but true everything was invented in the UK now manufactured by others.
 
Their right 80% of the Uk scaffold material comes from china and all system scaffold is from abroad. We may invent it but it can be made for a 10th of the price overseas.

Actionmakers , System scaffold from Bala Wales was closed down about 3 years ago nobody makes fittings in the UK. System like Cuplok and Kwikstage can be made quite easily a few jigs components and welders , but nobody is doing it at the moment. Scaffold fittings is a totally different product to make I dont think anybody even owns the tooling in the UK now.
 
We just bought 10k worth of gear, its all from China nowadays...
 
Just adding to our stock mate, selection of boards, fittings, tube, ladders , beams, gates..etc.. mostly used apart from boards and ladders
 
Actionmakers was something to do with lord paul --- well gone
 
Apollo Cradles manufacture Aluminium x beams and 450 beams in Barnsley and source the aluminium from foundries in the UK. As far as I'm aware most other scaffold equipment is manufactured abroad. Scafom have a robotised factory in Belgium in which they produce their versions of Cuplok and Layher (Duralok and Ringscaff).

Not sure if the pictures have come out on here but I have just returned from China looking at the guys who create the fitting you work with on a dailey basis!!

I have created an album with these same pics

looks like a very poor workplace to me.no (l.e.v) id say they do be coughing their lungs up every night..prob dont give a fcuk about h+s in china.:(
