Band and Plate chair

Aye, the Daddy of them all…ingenious design, quality sprung steel band hence the uncertainty of the direction of the Rick o' Shay when it hit the deck from hight…

Question : Urban Myth… True or False…

B & P + D/H were first used in conjunction with 1 inch and 27/28 th's O/D water pipes ( Maximum Length of water pipes just so happened to be 21 Feet ;) )

The only coupler you can deploy with two six inch nails :nuts:

Interesting. Never heard that before.

B&P Chair

I posted some chair pictures under my personal handle scaff a few years ago
Also good for gantries, trying to get drop forged doubles in a tight space is great if you want a black mans pinch :eek:

I had the pleasure of handling a 3" band & plate once, you wouldn't want to carry a sack of them up a ladder :eek:

19th February 2010 to be precise, Alan Reade may recognise the colour :D

I did my apprenticeship in the 80s with a company called walter Lawrence who emulated sgb in every way,as stated the chair increased pressure against the standard and ledger creating a stronger node point and increasing the slip resistance taking it from 6.25kn to 12.5kn as highlighted by Mr Reade,I hope all are well absence makes the heart grow fonder 😉😉

I haven't seen a "Chair" for years......

..........They were quite abundant in the '60s when I started and the Band & Plate was often referred to as the "3 Part Coupler"

It was a simple enough device about 3 inches deep with small ears that hooked onto the top of the Band (curved to the shape of the Standard).

The front side of the Chair was curved to the shape of the Ledger.......thickness was about a 1/2 an inch......but as has been said before;

They were easily lost! Also easily lost are Thumbscrews ....... As I am sure most of you know ☻
