Can't understand why lads would want to go self employed anymore ?

going on the cards, they get 4 weeks holiday pay - no brainer to me

So why don't they want to go PAYE???? - any ideas

Is it perhaps more of a case of contractors not wanting to employ full time - for that very reason?

Being PAYE, to the employer, means extra expense in terms of holiday pay, NI, employers tax, playing when work is not around, not being able to get rid of employees who aren't that good and still paying them...

I can see why employers take on self employed labour and it doesn't just happen in the scaffolding/ construction industry.

Paye pay about £70 a week in N.I contributions, self employed pay about £2 a week. A nice little tax return at the end of every year aswell :)

It's maybe an age thing Hatterscaff but I would take the paid holiday's every time. There was a time when graft and earning was the most important thing but after a few years of it you eventually learn.

Less tax being self employed, plus I get a nice rebate each year!

Just remember it's your own money ledger.

Rather in our pockets than someone elses though eh

Self-Employed get 4 weeks holiday pay,and any firm that does not pay them that are ripping them off.Cant believe betterTax agreed with you on this one Hatterscaff.I have been self employed for the best part of 15 years and yes at one time there was no holiday pay, but that all changed a long time ago, thanks to the unions.

Cant belive your agreeing that self-employed dont get paid holiday pay,tut-tut:

if your paye yes you get 4 weeks holiday pay but at basic hours which aint the best, i just got 2900 on my rebate so if you work that out in basic wages for a week it works out about six weeks wages plus less tax and n.i so it all adds up being cis

I think the real value is in the security that if an employee is PAYE, then he or she is guarenteed a minimum working week. (Usually 39 hours)

No such security in being self employed, although SE status suits some people for various reasons, as mentioned in earlier posts.

If i remember it was a European law that came out in October 1998, when they had to pay holiday pay to anyone that was self employed. I took 2 campanys to the tribunal they paid up before it even got there.

You now also entitled to holiday pay if your CIS so self employed is the one for me you get a rebait and holidays more money in my pocket than letting the tax man dish it out to immigrants of the uk but that's a different story

I'm strictly cash in the hand only.

Slash a house front up, knock one down - in the pub by 2pm.

£55 a day cash, plus I usually steal a bag of doubles a day!

A bit lost here oldcsaff!! If your self employed who would you get holiday pay from? I can see this if youre selfemployed working for one person. Which EC rule is this??

I always thought you were not allowed to work for the same firm for more than 30 consecutive days to be considered bona-fide self employed. I also remember a few moans and groans complaining in January about being stood down because of the snow without money.

this is why the games gone to the dugs, you dont work you dnt get paid, ie (price),no holiday pay, and your lucky to get an extra pound for going cis with a company n the price rate now is **** everywhere:mad:us scaffs are always getin shat on from a great height

Hi aom, dont know about the 30day rule ive worked for firms for 2/3 years never had a problem.

The rule is or was, what ever company you worked for you were entitled to holiday pay.

I thought it was a 10 week rule,Rigger posted on a thread a few weeks ago,the definition of self employed. Basically,if your told what to do on a regullar wage, your not self employed.
