Trad Scaffolding joins Altrad Group | Construction News | The Construction Index

France’s Altrad Group has tightened its grip on the UK scaffolding market by acquiring the Trad group of companies.

The purchase price has not been disclosed.

Trad Scaffolding was founded in London in 1971 and claimed to be the largest privately-owned scaffolding group in the UK.

It has approximately 450 employees and a turnover of about £45m a year. Its contracting business mainly focuses on the London and southeast markets. It also has a hire & sales business that operates through a UK branch network supplying all forms of access and scaffolding equipment.

The Trad Group will continue to operate from its current locations with Hayden

Smith as chairman, Des Moore as group managing director and Alan Skeats as group financial director.

In 2009 Altrad purchased Belle Group. In 2011 it bought Beaver 84 and NSG and then last year it added Generation Hire & Sales and MTD Scaffolding.

Altrad chairman Mohed Altrad, born in Syria of a nomadic Bedouin tribe, said that his latest UK acquisition provided a company that is strategically located for the convenience of the customers with a UK wide pool of expertise, while benefiting from the local knowledge and support.

Hayden Smith said: “Opportunities have been numerous over the years to sell the Trad Group but were never seriously considered as it would have led to changes in our successful management team followed by the loss of our long-established and well-respected identity. We did not want to suffer the same fate as the SGB brand.

“The Altrad Group offer made it very clear that they wanted the Trad Group but were very insistent that the team stayed intact long term to continue with our successful strategy of providing quality service and materials which is instrumental in both client satisfaction and retention.”

Altrad Belle UK managing director Ray Neilson, who has been assisting Dr Altrad the acquisitions, said: “This acquisition forms part of the bigger plan to provide the large UK market with products and services from Altrad who specialise in the manufacturing and sales of scaffolding, cement mixers and wheelbarrows, together with providing additional contracting services in the scaffolding sector.”

Altrad now has more than 80 subsidiary companies, mostly in Europe. The group is 78% owned by Dr Altrad, with the balance owned by his financial backers.

Game changer that one! a few winners and losers will come from that move

That now leaves lyndons as the biggest independently owned firm, wonder how long it will be before their owned by non brits.

Lynch donoghue = lyndon sureley that must be irish owned ?

ive picked on a few in my time the dirty ignorant bully basturds
as for altrad and the syrian owners i personally dont think its a good move NSG have feck all good contrats to mention since being taken over by the wheelbarrow firm.
I dont blame anyone for selling up amd would go as far as to blame the tories and the banking sector for fecking great british companies and making them vulnerable for takeover:mad:

I have been in this industry for a while now and have seen many companies; both large and small, come and go along with many back and forth changes in government and whilst not politically bent I can recall the assent to heady heights of the scaffolding industry under a Conservative government but do not recall anyone blaming them for that assent.

A smart move.
Hayden Smith is pushing on 80, he's no spring chicken.
Its a tidy inheritance package for his 2 children.
This way they will never need worry about working again.

TRAD, Generation and Beaver 84 all under the same umbrella. I think it could be us that are getting shafted at some point down the line, with the price of gear, large slice of the supply market there. Only Really George left up here now who's big enough to be competitive and independent.

I think the opposite may be true, I think others will be able to compete more easily now, with effectively one less in the market place and their combined overhead which must be considerable!

It will be like Curry's & Dixon was in the high street, side by side with the same owner; one will sell some items cheaper than the other and vice versa. IMHO

Ha

Generation are telling me they bought Trad! So I can give them all the orders I give Trad from now on!

Bunch of chancers

Wouldn't assist Generation if they were on fire in the street and I was bustin for a whizz.
