Default Edinburgh construction company fined over training failings

A construction company from Edinburgh has been fined a total of £3,600 for failing to ensure properly trained staff were managing a construction site, builders liability insurance holders have been told.

Scotcare Preservation of Ettrick Road pleaded guilty to four health and safety charges at Selkirk Sheriff Court last week.

The firm admitted that, during the construction of a house in 2008, it failed to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their employees.

It also said that it did not provide the site foreman with adequate health and safety training.

Furthermore, Scotcare admitted failing to comply with two improvement notices served by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in August 2008.

Gordon McLelland, HSE inspector, told public liability insurance holders: "We hope this case serves as a reminder to all companies using scaffolding that they need to ensure it is fit for purpose. Furthermore, HSE will not hesitate to recommend prosecution, even when there has been no incident, should conditions on site be poor enough to merit it."

Last year, Bracknell Roofing Co of Kent was fined £8,000 after it was prosecuted for using unsafe scaffolding on building work in Lincolnshire in 2008.
